This is the first time this unique annual conference will be held in Europe, and its focus on the Mediterranean holds particular meaning owing to the magnitude, history and characteristics of tourism in this region. The objective of these international conferences is to discuss how stakeholders in tourism can best deal with the issues that emerge around tourism activities taking place in particular destinations, with a focus on minimising the negative impacts on and maximising the benefits for local communities and their environment.
The conference will be co-hosted by Professor Harold Goodwin who chairs the International Tourism Partnership’s Advisory Panel. Key note speakers include Dr. Susanne Becken, Professor of Sustainable Tourism at Griffith University, Garry Wilson, Managing Director – Purchasing and Jane Ashton, Head of Sustainable Development at TUI Travel who will explain why TUI places such emphasis on taking responsibility for sustainable development.
Marta Martín, VP Corporate Responsibility NH Hotels and International Tourism Partnership Member, will be giving a keynote on the first day at 13:15 on 3rd October. There is a panel on Taking responsibility for the environmental impacts of tourism and there are still a few speaking slots available. More than 200 delegates and speakers, from more than a dozen countries, have now committed to be in Barcelona for RTD7 in the first week of October.
Parallel to the Conference the first Catalan Responsible Tourism Awards will be launched. These seek to recognize the best examples of organisations and individuals sustainability activities and share good practices.
