Before the year draws to a close, here's a quick run through of some 2012 highlights:
In July 2012 we launched the brand new website www.greenhotelier.org. Designed to enable the Green Hotelier and International Tourism Partnership (ITP) team upload content on a more regular and ‘real-time’ basis, we’ve been thrilled with the results. Hoteliers from all over the world have been using the site as a source of green hotel news, information about how to run or set up a sustainable hotel and find best practice examples. Having established a solid audience in the Americas and Europe, we're looking forward to widening the net in 2013 and reach out to more hoteliers throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Our Know How Guides have been some of the most popular on the site in 2012, proving how eager our audience is to learn! Thousands of you have been reading up on guides to Sustainable Bathrooms, Eco Interior Design, Waste Management and Water Management & Conservation, to name a few. It’s also been great to observe these Know How issues becoming firmly entrenched in the sustainable initiatives of the world’s largest hotel chains. For example, engaging local communities is now a staple part of most CSR initiatives. Hoping to follow suit in 2013? Take a look at our latest Know How guide 'What is Community Engagement?', which addresses how to implement a community strategy, looks at what companies have done in the past and provides useful tips and hints.
As part of the International Tourism Partnership, a leader of the sustainable agenda within the hotel industry, Green Hotelier is committed to sharing best practice when it comes to innovative, sustainable hotels. In September 2012 we launched a new section dedicated to Best Practice Case Studies. Besides those properties we already have on the site, we have lots lined up for 2013 including zero carbon hotels, eco spa resorts and green floating hotels. If you know of a hotel that is leading the way when it comes to sustainable initiatives then please get in touch!
Green Hotelier’s new Industry News section has created a useful communication platform when it comes to green hotel news. Whether there’s a new voltage optimisation product coming to market, the 1 billionth tourist sets foot in a hotel, partnerships lead to mattress and soap recycling schemes, hotels adopt eco solutions like herb gardens and wind turbines or sustainability reports reveal impressive new stats, we’ve loved spreading the word.
In November, the International Tourism Partnership celebrated 20 years of leading the sustainable agenda within the hotel industry. Stephen Farrant, director of ITP, reflects,
'The early pioneers that founded ITP made their choice clear. They chose to do business differently – to do business as if people and the planet matter – in short, to do business responsibly. Over the intervening decades, hundreds of other hospitality companies have also become advocates of the responsible business message. The collective achievements of the sector are impressive. But so much remains to be done if it is to reach its true potential as an industry delivering environmental and social improvements alongside economic development. In a finite world, this requires us all to find new ways of achieving growth; growth that is smart, inclusive and responsible.'
So with 2012 coming to an end, we're looking forward to a productive and sustainability-filled 2013. As global governments fail to mobilise as a group on the topic of climate change, in 2013 it is likely that the private sector leading the way. From our work with some of the world's largest hotel chains we know how committed this particular industry is to grow and do business responsibly. As business leaders increasingly understand the need for a greener economy we look forward to sustainability becoming even more entrenched in how big, small and medium size hotels do business.
With some topical new Know How guides, Best Practice Case Studies, news and resources lined up, and a monthly newsletter starting in Jan, there are plenty of reasons to watch this space so we look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year!
