Sustainability at The Sleep Event

Sustainability at The Sleep Event

The Sleep Event returns to London next week for the 8th year running, bringing with it hundreds of owners, managers, suppliers and designers from the world of luxury hotel design. Every year the number of eco related exhibitors grows, proving how entrenched sustainable practice is becoming.

Between the evening of Tuesday 20th November and Thursday 22nd, the event will host an array of activities including the European Hotel Design Awards, The Sleep Hotel, the European Hotel Design Conference, a trade show and free seminars. Green Hotelier is looking forward to two events in particular:

Sustainable Hotel Design at the European Hotel Design Awards

This award will reward the owner/operators of a hotel who have used innovative design and architecture and sustainable and environmentally friendly principles to develop a complete hotel design and experience.

The high-level judging panel including Chair of the judges Simon Ford of InterContinental Hotels Group, James Dilley of Jestico & Whiles, Gregoir Chikaher of Arup and Celia Geyer of Hilton Worldwide, had the difficult task of considering the countless entries and after much deliberation have revealed the following shortlist:

  • New Hotel, Athens, Greece – entered by 3SK Stylianidis Architects
  • Radisson Blu Hotel, East Midlands Airport, England – entered by Leach Rhodes Walker
  • Starhotels E.c.h.o, Milan, Italy – entered by Andrea Auletta Interior Design

Seminar: Efficient design from the outset and during development – what can be done at different project stages?

This free seminar on the Wednesday will be run by Ricardo Moreira, Co-Founder and Managing Director of XCO2 Energy, who offer environmental design guidance, alongside a variety of other services.

Although ideal, it is not always possible to integrate sustainability into design early on and so this talk investigates approaches for the various design stages, from environmental modelling to post-occupancy evaluation.

Through extensive knowledge of environmental design principles, climate analyses and detailed computer modelling, XCO2 Energy ‘guide design teams working on building and masterplan projects towards the optimum strategy for efficient design, helping them achieve their sustainability goals in a cost-effective manner’. Having worked for both real estate companies and global hotel chains, including Six Senses, it should be an interesting session offering practical advice.

Besides from these two events, there are some exhibitors at the trade show with strong eco credentials including LED design experts, sustainable wood producers and organic mattress suppliers.
