Whitbread receives platinum ranking in Corporate Responsiblity Index

Earlier this month Whitbread was one of only two hospitality companies to make it into the Business in the Community (BITC) Corporate Responsibility (CR) Index.

The annual CR Index has been run by Business in the Community (BITC) for over a decade. It is a voluntary benchmark to help companies measure and manage all aspects of their social and environmental performance.

Whitbread, operator of Premier Inn and Costa Coffee, has been featured in the index for several years and this year has been awarded a platinum ranking.

The index covers four areas: corporate strategy, integration, management and impact. An online survey asks questions on everything from diversity policies to carbon emission reduction goals. The results place each of the 107 companies into one of five performance bands – platinum big tick, platinum, gold, silver and bronze

The results of this years BITC CR Index were released during Responsible Business Week in mid April, during which BITC also launched their new Workwell benchmark. The results of this FTSE 100 benchmark scored the level of publicly available information provided by organisations across 25 employee engagement and well-being indicators.

Stephen Howard, BITC Chief Executive, said: “The Workwell benchmark represents a new chapter for CSR reporting and the low average scores are not unexpected at this first stage of development.  We are encouraged by the examples of leadership highlighted through this process, and by the commitment shown by a third of FTSE 100 companies, who proactively took part in the survey.

“We introduced our Corporate Responsibility Index 10 years ago and have seen how organisations have built their confidence in reporting key environmental and societal benefits through sustainability reports. Now we are encouraging organisations to use data effectively to demonstrate responsible people management and drive business performance improvements.  The survey for the 2014 Workwell benchmark will be launched in September this year and we will work closely with organisations to help them develop their reporting practices.”
