In 2015 International Random Acts of Kindness Week was celebrated between February 9-15, encouraging businesses and individuals all over the world to step up and show a random act of kindness each day of the week. Diamond asked employees to get involved with everything from surprising a co-worker with a treat, smiling at strangers, volunteering in the community, making someone laugh or donating unwanted items to charity.
The week proved a success with Diamond employees collecting and donating books to children in local communities, sending treats to employees in different offices and setting up department lucky dips. Keri Serrano-Long, Director of Foundation and Community Outreach at Diamond comments:
Practicing kindness is more than just a nice thing to do; it’s also beneficial to overall well-being. Did you know that kindness is scientifically proven to boost health, happiness and societal goodwill? Giving to others reduces depression and improves well-being, lowers blood pressure, helps increase energy levels and reduces anxiety. Studies show that people who engage in kind acts become happier over time.
The Random Acts of Kindness website has lots of interesting case studies and research to prove that being kind has a place in business. Kindness not only has a positive effect on the person on the receiving end but it also effects the doer and third parties that witness it. In the workplace this can very quickly help to create a sense of community.
