Children enjoy the special Charity Christmas Tree at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur

As thoughts turn to goodwill and giving during the festive season, many hotels are seeking to help their local communities.

The Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur performed the lighting ceremony of their Christmas Charity Tree on 4th December. The tree was switched on by General Manager Manfred Weber, assisted by the parents of the ten children with severe heart ailments who will benefit from the funds raised from the tree. The Christmas Charity Tree is an annual charity project titled “Embrace the Gift of Life” initiated by the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur to aid children suffering from serious heart ailments and who need surgery. Since 1985 the hotel has helped hundreds of critically ill children and raised more than RM3 million through the Christmas Charity Tree. This year, the funds raised from the Christmas Charity Tree will benefit ten children. For example, four-month-old Cayenne Chiam Jia Yin has Atrial Ventricular Septal Defect or two large holes in the heart. She needs surgery to correct the heart defects which would cost RM50,000. Her father Chiam Shiun Cheng is a marketing executive earning RM2,600 a month. Her mother Yeo Siew Hua is a housewife. Cayenne Chiam and the other children will all now receive the life-saving surgeries they need.

Meanwhile, specialist tour operator SpaDreams wanted to reward its customers with great offers, whilst also helping those who are less fortunate. The company’s Ayurvedic experts have teamed up with "Viva con Agua" (VcA) – to ensure that with every booking to India made in December, lifelong access to clean drinking water is made possible to the people who need it most. In India, the cradle of traditional Ayurvedic teaching, millions of people still live without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Now sanitation and hygiene measures are being secured through the WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene) campaign, strengthening the social position of the people. Dr. Nils Asmussen, manager of SpaDreams travel said, "Viva con Agua will set up a connection to clean drinking water as well as hygiene and sanitation facilities for over 300,000 people. As a tour operator specialising in health and wellness holidays, we consider this  social commitment to be very important.
