InterContinental Hanoi Launches Youth Career Initiative Programme

The InterContinental Hanoi Westlake underlined their commitment to young people and the local community with the launch of their Youth Career Initiative (YCI) programme.

The hotel is one of three official participating hotels in Vietnam to run the Youth Career Initiative (YCI) program in 2013.

Speaking at the launch General Manager, Mr. Adam McDonald said InterContinental were ‘delighted’ to be involved with the programme. He said, “We are very supportive of programmes that develop local talent. InterContinental prides itself on being part of its local community as does IHG, with our “IHG Academy” which is a worldwide initiative to grow local talent.”

The YCI is a global programme supported by the International Tourism Partnership which provides work opportunities for disadvantaged young people. The programme aims to strengthen participants’ career choices and to improve their employability.

Running for six months, the programme consists of 750 training hours, which is designed to fit the daily operations of a full-service hotel. It targets high school graduates aged between 18-21 years-old who have limited or no opportunities to find proper employment, continue in higher education or improve their lives. Participants must be able to show a full commitment to the programme and be willing to learn and develop through real-world environmental experience.

In future it’s hoped that some candidates may be selected from those who have escaped Human Trafficking and been through a rehabilitation process, thereby offering them much improved prospects.

Vietnam adopted the YCI programme in 2010 and REACH is the chosen Vietnamese NGO to host it this year. Fifteen participants have been selected to be part of the internship program with InterContinental Hanoi Westlake. Candidates will be given a combination of theoretical and practical instructions while rotating through different operational departments. The hotel will provide a practical platform for the candidates to experience the hospitality industry while most of the teaching comes from managers or highly experienced hotel staff. Certificates will be issued to all the participants at the end of the internship and those with exceptional performance will have a chance to receive a job offer at InterContinental Hanoi Westlake.
