Two hotel chains in the UK have found they really can Save Money and Cut Carbon thanks to partnerships with the website and consultancy team SaveMoneyCutCarbon.com.
Radisson Blu  and Park Inn by Radisson  – part of the Carlson Rezidor  group – are between them installing 145,000 new LED lights to reduce their electrical load by 3.67m watts across their 32 UK hotels. The reduction will save the company more than £250,000.
The switch will form part of Rezidor’s Think Planet initiative which is one aspect of their Responsible Business Programme.
The move to LED lighting will roll out in three phases concentrating first on corridors and back of house areas, before taking in ambient lighting in restaurants and function rooms, and finally moving into guest bedrooms.
Later the company will move to reduce guests’ water usage as well as maximising the efficiency of their hotel boilers.
The efficiencies have all been identified thanks to an estate-wide survey by SaveMoneyCutCarbon  who sent teams out to record data at each hotel. Meanwhile another partnership looks set to save the recently rebranded The Hotel Collection (formerly Puma Hotels) £58,000 on water consumption. The chain of 21 hotels in The Hotels Collection which has properties across the UK has switched all its shower heads after a SaveMoneyCutCarbon suvey found that some showers were running at 20 litres per minute or more.
The move to new Hansgrohe shower heads not only modernises and standardises guest bathrooms but ensures all showers now run at an impressive reduction of five litres per minute.
Within three months the hotels have recognised a water saving 25 per cent ahead of target with the predicted £58,000 coming over the next year and an additional £24,000 saving on energy.
Significantly the changes have had no impact on guest satisfaction, and the group will now look to make similar upgrades in their gym and leisure facilities as well as focussing attention on their heating, ventilation and boilers.
For SaveMoneyCutCarbon the project saw them not only survey the properties and present the recommendations but also sourcing and delivering the shower heads directly to each hotel in a further bid to reduce the group’s carbon footprint. They then assisted with the installation process to ensure each shower head would deliver to its full potential. The Hansgrohe EcoSmart shower heads ensure a cut in water consumption by 50 per cent with no effect on the shower experience.

The latest additions mean they are now on track to become the first international hotel group to have all its properties eco-labelled by 2015.

Radisson Blu hotels in Poland, Spain, Egypt, Denmark, Ukraine and Norway have all been eco-listed this year, as has the Park Inn by Radisson at Oslo Airport, Norway.
Rezidor works exclusively with internationally recognised eco-labels which are then validated by external audit. Key eco-labelling partners include Green Key, Nordic Swan, Green Tourism Business Scheme (UK) and Green Hospitality Award (Ireland).
In order to achieve an eco-label, hotels must comply with strict environmental requirements and actions in energy and water savings, waste and environmental management as well as their use of fair trade and organic products. The Radisson Blu Hotel Madrid Prado for example has invested 15,000 EUR in LED lighting, insulation measures, waste management and a move to eco-labelled cleaning products before they attained the Green Key.
