Amsterdam Manor’s Winning Ways

Winner of the Amex/Considerate Hotelier of the Year 2001: Green Hotel of the Year Award Small Hotel Category, Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort in Aruba takes action whenever possible to minimize its effect on the environment

The resort is a member of the Green Hotels Association, the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism (CAST) and is a certified Green Globe 21 member. These commitments require it to maintain high standards of environmental protection as well as providing a solid base for continual improvement.

The resort's employees follow a regular training programme so they too can play a full part in helping to preserve the Aruba environment. Wherever possible, water and energy-saving equipment has been installed.

Some of the measures recently taken include:

  • the use of propane gas in the air-conditioning chillers which is decreasing energy use by 20-25%
  • replacement of 75 Watt light bulbs with new 15 Watt bulbs, reducing energy consumption by 10-15%
  • water-saving shower heads and faucet aerators that now use 1.6 gallons of water per minute instead of more than 3 gallons per minute; toilet adjustments to 1.8 gallons per flush; and the use of a laundry detergent that requires 70 gallons of water per cycle instead of 130 gallons per cycle
  • bulk dispensing systems for housekeeping, laundry and dishwashing detergents
  • signs to encourage guest participation in conservation initiatives (such as turning off the lights, fan, AC and TV after use, recycling, personal water saving measures, and towel re-use)
  • motion detectors to detect human movements for the AC and door switches.

The resort encourages guests to participate in its efforts by helping 'tene Aruba limpi' (keep Aruba clean) such as using the rubbish containers positioned along all the island's beaches. Under the 'sponsor a mile' programme, adopted by many hotels on the island, each hotel undertakes to keep a mile (or more) along the coast clean.

Every third Wednesday of the month the resort holds collective 'beach clean-ups', from Bucuti Beach to Amsterdam Manor and encourages guests to participate. The towel reuse programme is also helping to reduce pollution and use of natural resources and the resort's overall environmental impact.
