Situated in Baroda, Gujarat, The Revival Hotel won the Small Hotels Category in the 2001 Federation of Hotels and Restaurants of India (FHRAI) environmental awards

The hotel's Eco-Aware Green Team (EAGT) consists of the Director, General Manager, Front Office Manager, Food & Beverage Manager, Executive Housekeeper, Security Officer and the Chief Engineer.

Together, they ensure that all staff are aware of the environment policy during induction through a multi-media CD. Eco-signs on energy conservation measures are displayed at staff entry points and the appraisal system has marks on eco-friendly measures. The EAGT is monitored by an external energy audit agency.

Guests are requested to use their linen more than once and to participate in the green movement during the Green Environment Fortnight, during which hotel staff conduct a 'Green March' around the city carrying banners about environmental protection.

Water saving measures include a loop logistic water system, sensors in toilets and water tanks and tap aerators. Waste water collected after washing the semi-basement is stored together with rain water and re-used to cool the generator engine and to clean the porch area and garbage room.

Suppliers use cardboard boxes for raw material purchases or jute bags for bulk groceries. Decorators use dry hay, cardboard, cement blocks, bricks and reusable durable decorations. All offices are given small white boards to use for notes, reducing the use of paper. All papers used on one side are re-used for draft printouts and the hotel is working towards a paperless office.

Chipped crockery is reused for potting fresh plants as gifts for regular guests. Pilot lamps in most gas burners have been replaced by quartz lighters.

Once the rooms are clean and ready the curtains are kept closed until the guest inserts the key tag when only one light comes on.

The hotel has been able to negotiate a reduced consumption of power from 150 KVA to 130 KVA and an upgrade to a CT meter separate from the lighting usage meter. The electricity boards of Baroda have given a rebate for achieving a power factor of 0.98, saving at least Rs5000 (US$100) per month, due to the maintenance of power condensers in the panel boards.

Through its successful measures to save fuel gas, the hotel is now paying the gas authorities Rs.252,000 (US$5,040) a year instead of the budgeted Rs.813,000 (US$16,260).

To promote local art, there is a regular display of paintings by local artists in the lobby and restaurant. The restaurant features three columns with artistic exposed brickwork characteristic of the Baroda heritage. Furniture is made from recycled wood.

The use of aerosol sprays is discouraged and solid waste is separated in all eight departments using black and blue bins. Vegetable garbage is collected daily by a cattle owner. Recyclable cans, bottles and other items are sold to scrap vendors who collect from the hotel each fortnight.

The key to the success of the hotel's EMS is in raising awareness, building commitment, providing support, rewarding and recognising effort and finally, celebrating success. The hotel aims to maintain the good health of its staff, avoid wasting energy, water and food and to minimise waste.

The Revival Hotel supports the local population by buying local farm produce in bulk, which also saves transportation fuel.
