Staff associates at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc have been spending October volunteering for their local communities in their second annual “Together As One” campaign.

Every October the global hotel group holds its global volunteer initiative and for the second year it is hosting Starwood Cares for the Community Together As One. During the month associates will participate in hundreds of unique activities and will donate thousands of hours to make a profound difference in communities around the world.

Ken Siegel, Chief Administrative Officer, General Counsel and Head of Global Citizenship said, “At Starwood, supporting our local communities is part of who we are, and one way we do this is through the generous donation of time and energy that our associates make throughout the year. We launched Together As One last year to support and encourage their volunteerism efforts and to celebrate the positive impact they have throughout the world.”

During last year’s two-week campaign, Starwood associates globally participated in more than 570 events, volunteering more than 32,000 hours. In 2015, Together As One has expanded to a full month, with activities and special events organised by hotel, office, or region.

One example of this year’s activities includes the work of Starwood associates from The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort in Cancun, Mexico. The team there have been helping crabs get to the other side of the road near the resort.

Every September and October usually during full moon, blue crabs travel from Nichupte Lagoon to the Caribbean Ocean to spawn, but they must cross the busy, main road during the evening in Cancun to do so.

Using gloved hands, buckets and crates, associates helped them make the journey, ensuring their safety at a time when the blue crab population appears to be dwindling in the area. This is one way Starwood associates can do their part to give back to their local communities, by protecting the local ecosystem.

Some larger events planned for the month include:

  • Run to Give” fundraising road race on October 11 for associates from 105 properties across Asia Pacific. Funds raised are supporting local charities.
  • The launch of Starwood’s first Road to Awareness™ North America on October 15, with associates at hotels and offices in the United States and Canada running, biking or using the elliptical machines in their fitness centers to raise money for Clean the World, a nonprofit that recycles hotel amenities and distributes them to those in need.
  • The on-going Road to Awareness™ EAME fundraising campaign taking place year-round in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The fundraising culminates in two cross-country bicycle races this year with funds going to UNICEF.
