The Radisson Blu Hotel, Leeds has been awarded the Rezidor ‘Think Planet’ Award for 2013.

The hotel based in Leeds UK battled it out against the entire Carlson Rezidor EMEA portfolio of over 430 hotels to win the award.

The Think Planet Award recognises the hotel within the Group which achieves the highest energy savings during the course of the year, as part of a targeted 25% energy reduction across all Carlson Rezidor Hotels throughout EMEA by 2016. Achieving spectacular energy savings of 33% kWh/m2 and 35.5 kWh/occupied room, Radisson Blu Leeds came out on top.

In recognition of the contribution the hotel has made to energy efficiency, every staff member within the hotel received a folding bicycle as part of the award.

“We worked hard to implement a number of tools that would help us to achieve the significant reduction in energy consumption that we’ve seen,” said John Hall, Chief Engineer at Radisson Blu Hotel, Leeds. “All installations relating to heating, ventilation and air-conditioning were optimised, and controls and temperature sensors were checked. Further work included the installation of 600 LEDS - which completed phase one of our lighting retrofit project.”

Additional measures included an employee awareness poster campaign, daily meter readings and close monitoring of Think Planet performance, as well as the installation of new energy efficient kitchen appliances and ‘Cheetah’ variable kitchen ventilation.

“We also looked at air flow filters within guest rooms. Our portfolio management programme ensures the filters are cleaned regularly, ensuring a steady flow of air coupled with efficient energy use,” said Hall.

Valerie Donaldson, General Manager at Radisson Blu Hotel, Leeds, said: “The hotel’s increased focus on its preventative maintenance programme guarantees the guests’ comfort and adds a few percentage points of energy savings.”

The entire hotel staff received their prize of a bicycle each at a ceremony at the hotel on Monday 12th May.

Speaking at the event, Inge Huijbrechts, Vice President Responsible Business at Rezidor Hotel Group, said “Think Planet is our contribution to sustainable tourism. We have set a very ambitious target to really move the needle. Thirty six of our hotels, including the Radisson Blu Leeds, have already reached the five-year Think Planet target.”

Think Planet is part of Carlson Rezidor’s Responsible Business programme and focuses on minimising their hotels’ environmental footprint. Think Planet aims to reduce energy consumption by 25% throughout the EMEA hotel portfolio by the end of 2016, reducing water consumption and installing water saving devices in guestrooms; having 100% of hotels eco-labelled by 2015; and reducing waste to landfill.

2013 Think Planet highlights include the proportion of eco-labelled hotels in the group reaching 69% (232 hotels) and the launch of the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative – the industry-approved methodology to calculate carbon emissions for hotels – together with the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) and World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
