The first TripAdvisor GreenLeader bronze status in Bristol has been awarded to The Bristol Hotel.
The hotel has recently launched a Green Team and has been working in all areas of the hotel to “Go Green” with a different Green focus of the month.
Among the initiatives the team has implemented has been recycling bins for:
- Electrical Appliances
- Cooking Oil
The hotel’s bed linen and curtains are all recycled. Additionally they save energy and water with training in best practises for all staff and have a Green close down checklist for each department.
They ask guests if they would like their towels/bedding changed via a tent card in their room.
Where possible they use local suppliers who proudly mark their status on the restaurant menu.
When supplies are not locally sourced - such as tissues in guest rooms - they use FSC products.
The Green Team is made up by a member of staff from each hotel department to champion the focus of the month and help with new initiatives. Interest, awareness and engagement with staff was raised via a Green Pledge Board.
The Bristol Hotel has 187 rooms and suites and is located in the heart of the city, between the historic cobbled Narrow Quay and Queen Square. The property is housed in a distinctive 1960s building, and whilst it is recognised architecturally as a prime example of the Modern movement, their first big green project was to change their 1960’s boilers from oil to gas. The move made a massive difference to their ability to save money and use less energy.
The Green Team has a focus of the month which started with recycling, and in August is cycling.
The month’s focus was launched with a Cycle for the Heart Bike Ride which raised over £1000 for the British Heart Foundation .
Seven members of the team plus a few family and friends cycled 15 miles to Bath for the hotel’s chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation. One team member on roller-skates joined them for part of the journey.
The programme also encouraged staff to get on their bikes to travel to work, as well as reducing energy, water and general wastage by turning off equipment and back of house lights when not in use, and recycling as much as possible including paper, card, glass, lamps, batteries, waste oil and waste food.
The GreenLeaders programme is new to TripAdvisor in Europe and helps travellers around the world to plan greener trips by highlighting hotels that engage in environmentally-friendly practices.
