A Maldivian resort has partnered with a food waste solution to bring sustainable farming to the area.

Dusit Thani Maldives has added a state-of-the-art composting machine on the island that is both contributing further to the environmental protection of Mudhdhoo Island, as well as advancing towards sustainable farming.

Built by Compostech and certified by the Green Building Index, the new composting machine is the first of its kind for a resort in the Maldives as it is constructed purely of stainless steel.

The machine is loaded every morning with food waste and is left to run for 24 hours to break down the contents into compost, resulting in an 85% reduction of waste. The direct compost produced is extremely clean and pure and is currently mixed with the island’s existing sandy soil to create fertiliser which helps nourish some of the island’s vegetation, as well as the variety of herbs in the chef’s garden.

As more compost is produced on a daily basis, it will be used to plant fruit and vegetable seeds as part of the resort’s plans towards sustainable farming on the island.

Reinhold Johann, General Manager, Dusit Thani Maldives, said, “This is a very exciting and critical development for the resort, as we maintain the sustainability of the island and look towards the future with new projects for enhancing the natural environment and creating new growth opportunities.”

Dusit Thani Maldives comprises 94 villas and residences. The resort is located on Mudhdhoo Island in Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, 35 minutes by seaplane from the capital city, Malé. The resort is surrounded by a rich house reef, white sand beaches and a turquoise lagoon.
