WELCOME TO GREEN HOTELIER

Stephen Farrant

As the balance of power in the world’s economy shifts, and countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) increasingly move into pole position, how do sustainable practices factor into their business operations? In this issue of Green Hotelier, we look at some of the stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding the perceived sustainability of these countries, in an attempt to ascertain how the BRIC countries operate.

Meanwhile, the Arab spring, riots in Greece and public discontent with the corporate world underline the fact that today, more than ever, businesses face a tough operating environment. It is increasingly apparent that to rely solely on legal frameworks is insufficient. Focusing not only on the legal, but also the social licence to operate, may be a great way to mitigate some of the risks facing businesses today. To that end, our Know-How guide to community engagement offers practical advice and case studies for you and your business.

Elsewhere in this edition, we travel to Rio de Janiero ahead of the Rio +20 Earth Summit to see how Brazil’s largest city has implemented and developed its goals set at the first Earth Summit, held there 20 years ago.
