Every year, ITP and BITC member company IHG holds its Race Around the World campaign, encouraging its staff member and guests to take part in as many different activities as they can. Many will be walking, running, cycling, rowing or swimming in their hotels or around their neighbourhoods.
Their efforts will help raise money and awareness of the Shelter in a Storm programme which activates in IHG properties in disaster-struck regions, and the global hotel company will also be making a donation for each act of participation.
Over 100,000 colleagues across IHG’s hotels and corporate offices have already signed up, making more than 200,000 pledges to date. Activities pledged so far include one person who has made a commitment to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kate Gibson, Vice President Corporate Responsibility, said, “At IHG, being a responsible business is at the heart of everything we do. IHG Shelter in a Storm is a critical part of this, helping us prepare our hotels to act quickly and decisively to support guests, colleagues and local communities when disaster strikes.
“We are hugely excited to have colleagues around the world coming together to raise awareness and funds for IHG Shelter in a Storm. We have seen a huge amount of creativity in the activities our people have pledged to take part in so far and are encouraging others to participate in any way they can.”
IHG’s week of awareness and fundraising activities is running from 22nd-29th September, 2014.
Last year Race Around the World saw more than 60,000 employees take part in fundraising activities, which raised $1.2 million for the IHG Shelter Fund enabling the company to respond quickly to disasters. In 2013 the programme supported 15 disasters across eight countries.
From 2013 to 2017 the company has made a commitment to donate $10m in cash and in-kind support to communities affected by disaster, and they are already well on the way to achieving that goal.
