Earth Hour is marked around the world on Saturday 19th March from 8.30pm to 9.30pm local time. Organised by WWF, Earth Hour asks people and businesses to turn their lights off for an hour to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints and to raise awareness of climate change
Earth Hour began as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has expanded to more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide in over 162 countries and territories. Hundreds of millions of people all over the world join together and switch off their lights for an hour in a show of support for environmental action.
Andrea Pinabell, Vice President of Sustainability at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide said, “Climate change is a great concern for our associates, guests and the ongoing success of our business. Earth Hour is an opportunity for our properties around the world to have an impact while engaging guests. Everyone plays a role in protecting and promoting our planet.”
Many Starwood properties are taking part, but the highlights include:
The Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa will have a charcoal live cooking station by the sea under the stars with acoustic music by associates and candlelit tables. Air conditioning in all guest rooms will be switched off as well as lights in all restaurants.
The Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort will host a cultural fire dance in the Atrium for guests. Lights in The Point, the lobby chandelier and in the offices will be replaced with candles.

On the Saturday, an UNLOCK Art photography exhibition will be on display featuring “My Earth Hour”, which is the associates’ perception of what Earth Hour means to them. A welcome ritual will begin with a lighting ceremony followed by a “Glow In The Dark” event that will take place on the beach with candlelit entertainment and the traditional and energetic Moutya dance. For dinner, guests will be able to dine on a special “à la carte” and under the stars at Le Bourgeois Restaurant.
