The Radisson Blu Hotel Marseille is this year’s winner of Carlson Rezidor’s Think Planet Award. The hotel was recognised for its exemplary commitment to energy and water savings.

The annual Think Planet award is open to all 480 Carlson Rezidor hotels in Europe, Middle East and Africa, and recognises the hotel that makes the biggest difference in terms of energy and water savings per year.

The Think Planet initiative launched in 2011, aiming to reduce energy consumption across all EMEA properties by 25%. Additional targets were then put in place to reduce carbon emissions and water consumption by a further 10% by 2020. Each hotel works towards an annual Think Planet action plan, with tracking measures implemented to monitor success.

Examples of smart energy habits implemented in Marseille, and at other hotels in the group, include: turning off unnecessary lighting, replacing light bulbs with LED’s, and regulating heating and air conditioning temperatures. The Radisson Blu Marseille also installed a fully induction-powered kitchen and invested in new and efficient tunnel washers.

At the same time, through Blu Planet, the Radisson Blu brand’s commitment and focus on water mindfulness, hotels have collectively achieved a 29% saving in water usage since 2007, with a commitment to reduce by a further 10% by 2020. Additionally, through its partnership with the charity Just a Drop, over two million towels have been reused since the launch of the programme in 2015, providing over 10,000 children with safe drinking water for life.

On Tuesday 6th June 2017 - the tenth anniversary of the hotel’s opening - a celebration was held at the Radisson Blu Marseille, and as a mark of gratitude, all 50 team members working in the hotel were gifted a bike in recognition of the entire team’s commitment to delivering such strong results. The hotel, located on Marseille’s Vieux Port, has achieved a huge 31% reduction in energy consumption in the last five years. Inge Huijbrechts, Vice President Responsible Business for Carlson Rezidor and Georges Chauve, General Manager of the hotel, were on hand to present each team member with their own foldable bike, symbolising their commitment to the environment.

Huijbrechts said, “I am so proud of the entire team at the Radisson Blu Marseille, their commitment, hard work and dedication has resulted in some fantastic energy and water savings for the hotel and they are very worthy winners of our 2016 Think Planet award. I hope the celebration and gift of the bike serves as motivation for the hotel to continue on their Think Planet journey, delivering even more savings in the years to come.”

Georges Chauve, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Hotel, Marseille, said, “It’s a real honour to receive this award and provides a great tribute to the team for their commitment to the environment. In Marseille, we have undertaken major changes to reduce our energy and water consumption and importantly, we wanted to prove that we can still maintain the quality of our guest services whilst contributing to the sustainable development of our planet.”
